After the departure of guitarists Cazqui and Daichi NOCTURNAL BLOODLUST recruited a new guitarist: Rin. Unfortunately the release of the mini-album UNLEASH was cut short by the arrest of Rin, as well as the new addition being fired from the band shortly after, cancelling the tour and thus pushing NOCTURNAL BLOODLUST’s remaining members 尋 (Hiro) (vocal), Masa (bass) and Natsu (drums) back into the shadows of the music industry.
Recently however the band have recruited yet another new (at the moment of writing this review still a mystery) guitarist and have released a digital single called “Life is Once” as a “counterattack” for 2020. The single has been released on iTunes and Apple Music on May 29th for download and streaming, and has hit other platforms including (but not limited to) Google Play Music, Amazon Music, Spotify and Deezer on June 8th!
Now, here is the part where I actually go off-script for a moment. Since “Life is Once” is a single-song-release and thus something I wouldn’t normally cover for the sake of it being just a single song. That being said, I am going to make this exception this time because of who the band is as individuals.
01. Life is Once
Life is Once
(Composed by Masa, lyrics by 尋 (Hiro).)
If you are familiar with the bands work throughout the years, the second “Life is Once” starts playing you will be able to tell who the artist of this song is. While the previous mini-album took an entirely different direction within the metal genre (due to influences of a new member, presumably) this single is absolutely what you would expect from NOCTURNAL BLOODLUST.
Powerful drums supported by solid bass, a heavy guitar play mixed in, and 尋 (Hiro) showing off what he does best: screaming and growling. On top of that are 尋 (Hiro)’s lyrics: straight to the point, brutally honest, and unlike the previous release back to the English language that we have grown so used to from the band. Whoever their new mystery guitarist is (I have a few suspicions, but am not going to voice those), it sounds like they have found the perfect match – the match they were initially were supposed to find – keeping in mind the preferences of each member musically speaking, and are finally able to put the previous fiasco behind them for good.
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that NOCTURNAL BLOODLUST has emerged from the shadows once again, and this time with a vengeance even bigger than before. If “Life is Once” is any indication of what the future of the band’s music is going to look like then I personally am quite excited. With the band currently being in the studio I’m pretty sure we can expect more works sooner than later. Something I am already looking forward to.
If you haven’t heard the works of the band before, now is definitely a good time to jump on this bandwagon of sorts. NOCTURNAL BLOODLUST have proven time and time again that they absolutely deserve their title within the metal genre more than anything, so if you need some good metal music in your life, again, this is the time to hook in on this.
